Chii coffee
A moment to unwind in the city.
Tucked into residential Machiya in Arakawa Ward, Chii coffee serves daily single-origin drip coffee and espresso alongside whole-wheat morning toast and pastries such as florentines.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Set along the residential streets of Machiya in Arakawa Ward, Chii coffee pairs carefully brewed single-origin coffee with a calm, unhurried atmosphere. Opening at 8:00, the shop draws plenty of morning visitors dropping in for the daily drip selection or a breakfast built around toasted whole-wheat bread.
A favorite among the morning plates is the whole-wheat toast set, which comes with house-made spiced salad chicken and a small cup of yogurt. The bread is toasted until crisp, spread with butter, and can be paired with an original black sesame paste for an extra layer of roasted richness and depth. Enjoyed alongside the morning-only daily drip coffee, it makes for a quiet, restorative start to the day.
Coffee takes center stage, with single-origin beans rotated daily for pour-over drip, espresso, and cafe lattes that showcase each origin's distinctive character. The pastry counter is equally thoughtfully considered, featuring nutty caramel florentines, chewy custard-like Far Breton from Brittany, and biscotti made for dipping into warm milk foam. Pairing a latte—especially with an extra shot of espresso—with a florentine offers a satisfying balance of gentle bitterness and caramelized sweetness.
Beyond coffee, the drink list includes organic Nilgiri and rooibos tea, house ginger ale made with domestic ginger, and alcoholic pours such as Hoegaarden draft beer and Japanese wine served with small savory bites. With both counter and table seating, plus full takeout options, the shop works just as well for an afternoon pause during a stroll as it does for picking up fresh whole-bean coffee to brew at home.
